The key differentiating feature is the inclusion of a set of stationary guide vanes, or stator vanes, positioned immediately following the rotating impeller[13]. The rotating blades impart kinetic energy and velocity to the air, but they also introduce a significant tangential or rotational velocity component—the "swirl"—which is a waste of energy[13].
