The Real Struggles MBA Students Face While Completing Their Projects

When I started my IGNOU MBA project (www.hjjang.org) project, I imagined it would be straightforward. Choose a topic, do some researching, write it down and submit. Easy. I had envisioned the project could be completed in a couple of weeks. A couple of late nights prior to the date. Reality hit fast. The project will not be reporting. It tests your plan, capacity to endure and cope with unexpected challenges. Almost everyone in my batch suffered in a way.

A majority of students think they will think of the project as regular papers or studies. After a few weeks, they realize that deadlines are much closer than they thought but the data is not in order, chapters are not linked and motivation suffers. The MBA project can become overwhelming if you don't manage it properly.

Here I will outline the problems that students confront along with ways to deal with them. There isn't a secret formula however, gaining knowledge from experience helps a lot.

Choosing a Topic Is Harder Than It Looks

A topic could seem easy, but this isn't. I made the mistake of choosing a topic, which looked impressive but was impossible to carry out. There were weeks of time as I attempted to collect data from companies who had not responded. My classmates would pick fashionable topics without thinking about how much data was available. The result is the same. You are exhausted for weeks and exhausted.

A practical topic is far better than a flashy one. The topic should be in line with your available resources and interests. For example rather than "The Future of Marketing in India" opt for "Social Media Marketing Strategies in Local Retail Stores." This is a more targeted approach to data collection, so it is much easier to collect, and goals are more clear.

Objectives Are More Important Than You Think

The goals you set for your project should be clear and concise. Numerous students do the error of writing vague objectives, such as "To study the impact of leadership on productivity." It's not telling anything. I had to rewrite my own multiple times to make them concrete and lucid.

Specific objectives assist you in deciding methods, data collection and analysis. If you don't have clear objectives, your project is not connected. I've learned to ask myself what I'm planning to measure, and how will know if my efforts are successful. These types of questions make an enormous difference in the level of work.

Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful

Data collection is where most students are struggling. I have spent hours contacting small businesses for surveys. Some ignored me completely, while other companies promised me answers but did not materialize. The online surveys can be helpful but the answers can be a bit sporadic.

Analysis is a second challenge. You could have the most perfect tables and charts but if they aren't explained the meaning behind them, they're useless. I've seen my students copy graphs directly without interpretation. The numbers don't prove anything unless you present them.

It is a good idea to test your survey with a couple of people at first. It can help you identify confusing questions and prevents you from wasting time. Always be sure to connect your analysis to objectives. In the case of a project that investigates satisfaction with customers, make sure the questionnaire includes measurable questions about service quality, product quality, and the speed of response.

Time Management Is Tough

Everyone is aware that time management is important, but in MBA it's harder than it might sound. Between lectures, group work along with internships and assignments there's no time. I put off chapters hoping I could complete them in a few days. But a few weeks later I was panicking.

Breaking the project into smaller tasks is helpful. Then divide it into literature overview and methodology, data gathering, analysis and writing chapters each separately. Record small, incremental progress every week. One chapter or section done each week is a great motivator.

Writing Is Harder Than You Think

Even with a data-ready writing can be challenging. I had trouble explaining findings in simple language. Some parts felt repetitive. I changed the structure of the chapter several times.

Maintain a simple language that is easy to read. Have your friends review the sections. Sometimes, getting caught up in your own project can make it impossible to see the flaws. Fresh eyes help a lot.

Supervisors Can Be Helpful But Also Frustrating

A supervisor's job is challenging. Some provide clear direction while others are ambiguous or difficult to satisfy. I waited 2 weeks for the one response, and it held up my progress.

The key is being proactive. Make sure you have specific questions prepared, maintain a respectful manner, and record feedback. Your supervisors are helpful, but you have to be responsible for your own project.

Formatting and References Matter

I initially didn't care about formatting. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I thought I could repair them later. Big mistake. It could have delayed the submission.

References are equally important. One missing citation can raise questions. Utilize software to manage references and manage them while writing chapters, rather than waiting until the end. Properly formatted documents make your work more readable and more professional.

Stress Is Real

Stress is inevitable. deadlines, corrections, and insufficient data can create a huge amount of stress. At times, I stared at my screen and felt I'd never make it through.

Short breaks help. Talking to friends, going on a walk, listening to music. Celebrate small wins. Achieving a completed literature review or data collection are both milestones. They help keep the motivation going.

Ethical Confusion

Many students get anxious about the kind of assistance allowed. You may seek guidance but you aren't able to get someone else to write your proposal. Ethical guidance may include comments on structure, methodology and clarity. The original work is yours to keep.

Requesting help does not necessarily mean you are cheating. It is smart to use available resources. Students are expected to take advantage of assistance if they're stuck.

Reviewing Your Work

I went through each chapter separately at first. Then I realized that the project as a whole was full of repetitions the same terms, inconsistent words and hyperlinks. When I read the entire project, it reveals some gaps. Imagine yourself as an examiner. You'll notice mistakes you missed otherwise.

Procrastination Destroys Quality

Delaying work is a big issue. I was thinking I could complete data analysis and writing in the span of a few nights. But that never happened. Every delay lowered quality.

Begin early. Even one paragraph or section each day adds up. The project is now smaller and less daunting.

What I Learned

The MBA project isn't difficult because of complexity. It's challenging because students overlook planning, clarity, and direction. Incorrect mistakes are common. The most important thing is to learn and continue to improve.

Being organized can help, but flexibility is what's more important. Things rarely go according to plan. Certain data may not be available and supervisors may delay their actions delays, and hurdles will come up. It's about how your approach to these issues. Split tasks into segments and focus on one step at a time, and maintain an eye on your expectations.

Projects impart skills that transcend academics. Time management, discipline in research clarity in writing, problem-solving are all lessons which are still relevant in professional life. The job is stressful, but also practical.

If you're planning to begin your MBA project, select a topic which you are able to study. It is important to define your goals. Create small steps. Get help when you need it. Pause for breaks. Write in a simple manner. Avoid chasing perfection. Begin very early.

The MBA project will be more than just a document. It tests your ability to plan, perseverance and problem-solving. It is a challenge for you to master. Everyone does. However, every fight teaches us something. In the end, your project doesn't just end up being submitted. It helps you become researcher, student, and as a professional to come.
