The Real Struggles MBA Students Face While Completing Their Projects

When I first started my IGNOU MBA project solutions project I thought it would be simple. Pick a topic, perform some research, then write it up and submit. Easy. I had envisioned having it completed in a few weeks. I could have a couple of late nights prior to the date. Reality came fast. This project is more than a report. It tests your thinking, patience and ability to deal with unexpected problems. Everyone in my class was challenged in one way or another.

Students often think they can manage the project similar to regular assignment or case study. The clarity of your objectives will help you choose the methodology, method of data collection and analysis. If your objectives are not clear, your project feels unconnected. I've learned to inquire about what exactly I'm looking to measure and how I will determine if I have succeeded. These questions make a massive difference in the performance of your work.

Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful

The process of collecting data is where the majority of students are struggling. I have spent countless hours calling small businesses asking for surveys. Some refused to answer me, and other companies promised me answers but didn't come. Online surveys help but responses can be a bit sporadic.

Analyzing data is a challenge in itself. One can have perfect charts and tables, but if you are unable to explain the meaning behind them, they're unusable. Students copied graphs and charts without understanding. There is no proof for numbers unless you present them.

A suggestion is to take a test run of your survey to a couple of people first. It allows you to identify questions that are unclear while avoiding wasting time. Make sure you link your analysis to goals. If, for instance, your project investigates customer satisfaction, make sure your questionnaire asks quantifiable questions regarding service quality, product reliability and response time.

Time Management Is Tough

Everyone has heard that time management and planning is important, but for MBA it's more difficult than it is. Between classes, group work assignment and internships there is not enough time. The chapters I was putting off thought I could finish them in a few days. A few weeks later, I was in panic mode.

Formatting and References Matter

I didn't pay attention to formatting initially. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I believed that I could rectify them later. Big mistake. It nearly delayed the submission.

References are equally important. One missing citation can raise questions. Make use of tools for managing references and manage them while writing chapters instead of waiting until the last. Proper formatting makes your project easier to read and makes it appear more professional.

Stress Is Real

Stress is unavoidable. Deadlines, corrections and unfinished information can become overwhelming. In the evenings, I sat staring at the screen feeling like I'd never have time to finish.

Short breaks help. Chatting with friends, going for a walk, or listening to music. Enjoy small victories. Writing a review of literature or finishing the data collection are important milestones. They maintain motivation.

Ethical Confusion

Many students get anxious about what kind assistance is allowed. If you want to get help, however you can't have someone else write your essay. Ethics-related guidance can include feedback on structure, methodology and clarity. Original work must remain yours.

Requesting help does not mean that you're cheating. It is beneficial to use the resources available. Supervisors require students to ask for help if they're stuck.

Reviewing Your Work

I went through each chapter separately initially. Later I realized the project as a whole contained repetitions as well as inconsistent terms, and no hyperlinks. When I read the entire project, it reveals imperfections. Imagine yourself as the examiner. It will be easier to spot errors that you would have missed otherwise.

Procrastination Destroys Quality

This is a major problem. My initial thought was that I would finish data analysis and writing in the span of a few nights. This never worked. Every delay slowed down quality.

Get up early. Every paragraph or part each day adds up. The project is now manageable instead of overwhelming.

What I Learned

The MBA task isn't a difficult one because of its complexity. It's tough because students underestimate planning, clarity and direction. Making mistakes is a normal part of life. The trick is to learn and continue to improve.

Being organized can help, but flexibility is more important. It is not often that things go according to plan. Certain data may not be available as well as supervisors might delay the process while obstacles will pop up. What's important is how you handle these problems. Break tasks into pieces so that you can focus on one action at a stretch, and make sure you have realistic expectations.

Projects can teach you skills beyond the academic. Discipline in research, time management clarity of writing and problem solving are skills that can be used in professional life. The research project can be stressful but also useful.
